Every year around 110 million units of donated blood are collected globally. Ensuring their safety until they are required for transfusion is a major responsibility for blood bank and transfusion services.

Mr. Robat works as technologist at the blood bank of the CHU-UCL Hospital in Namur, Belgium. His department is in charge of performing immunohematology tests on the blood samples collected and stored for patients who need blood transfusions. Throughout the whole process, from the donation to the transfusion, blood needs to be maintained within a narrow temperature range from 2°C to 6°C as recommended by expert institutions such as AABB and ISBT. At the CHU-UCL Hospital, health care providers rely on the cooling technology developed by B Medical Systems to store and transport their blood products in optimal conditions.

B Medical Systems’ Blood Bank Refrigerators are the results of 40 years of experience in medical refrigeration. Classified as medical devices Class IIa, the refrigerators meet the highest regulatory requirements and deliver high performance in terms of temperature uniformity, stability, and recovery. Despite frequent door openings, the refrigerators ensure safe storage at a constant temperature through the entire cabinet. The cooling technology also protects the bags from freezing, and a remote monitoring / alarm system controls the performance of the device day and night.

The CHU-UCL Hospital bought the very first blood bank refrigerator installed in Belgium. The B51 model offers the smallest net volume of 45L available in the market with a high storage capacity of 31 bags (350mL). Mr. Robat and the nurse Mrs. Machuelle share their experience with B Medical Systems’ refrigerator. On top of improving patient outcomes through safe storage, the ultra-silent blood bank refrigerator brings them comfort and support in patient blood management with minimized loss.
