Innovating the Ultra-Low Temperature Cold Chain with Compact Solutions to Fight COVID-19

It has been clearly established in the past months that some of the new COVID-19 vaccines, such as the one jointly created by Pfizer and BioNTech, require to be stored at the ultra-low temperature of -70°C. Because of this requirement, the demand for Ultra-Low Freezers has recently skyrocketed all over the world.

These ultra-low freezers are extremely important as they are the only solution that can guarantee the safe storage of these highly thermosensitive vaccines from the manufacturers to the patient. But not all models are the same and they need to be used the most efficient way possible to guarantee that the vaccines will be able to reach what is currently referred to as “the last mile”, the last effort needed to ensure that a vaccine reaches the intended recipient.

The way vaccination campaigns are set up is by having a central hub where vaccines can be stored long term, from where the distribution of doses to smaller local hub and points of care can take place. The reason for this organisation is to be able to reach the furthest areas from the central hub and therefore attempting to reach all the potential recipients, even in remote areas. However, the equipment utilised to store the vaccines varies depending on the stage of the cold chain where it is meant to be used: for example, an ultra-low freezer that can store hundreds of thousands of doses would most likely be too big for the vaccination needs of a small town.

B Medical Systems, with its four decades of experience as market leader in the Vaccine Cold Chain, understood this issue and created an innovative solution: the U201, a compact Ultra-Low Freezer with a reduced storage capacity.

The new model is designed to reach a temperature of -86°C and ensures rapid and simple deployment because of its compact nature. It has a storage capacity of 206L, perfect for pharmacies, doctor’s clinics, and even small hospitals.

The U201 though does not only store vaccines at -86°C: its wide temperature range goes from -20°C to -86°C, making it possible to also store other vaccines with different storage temperature requirements, such as Moderna’s. This feature, coupled with the product’s use of natural refrigerants, make it a small, reliable, green, and effective solution for the need of a space-saving ultra-low freezers in small vaccination hubs and points of care.

But for when the vaccinations will be completed and this pandemic will be a distant memory, these compact ultra-low freezer models will not become futile: they can be easily repurposed to store other sensitive materials such as medicines, blood plasma or other biological samples, and their good compatibility with already existing storage accessories will ensure a simple use for them in the future.

The U201 is the perfect response to the worldwide growing need for Ultra-Low Freezers to prepare for the first COVID-19 vaccine, but it is also important to realise that it is also a great investment to store other biologicals post-pandemic.
